Melbourne is the easiest city in Australia to spend an evening in. Small bars that stay open on a Tuesday, restaurants that take a walk-in at ten, trams that run late, and a companion scene with a reputation for dinner dates and unhurried evenings. Victoria completed decriminalisation in December 2023, so independent companions, venues and clubs all operate lawfully and openly, and the city's scene has only deepened since. This guide is the local knowledge: where the independents work from, where an evening lands, and how to make it easy.
Everything here is for adults; our state-by-state guide covers the law in detail.
How the city is laid out
- The CBD and Southbank are where outcalls land: the hotels along Collins Street, Flinders Lane, Southbank and Docklands. Companions across the inner city travel here, usually without a travel fee.
- South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor hold a dense run of incalls in apartments, and Chapel Street for bars before and after.
- St Kilda has its own long-standing scene, more relaxed, with Fitzroy Street and Acland Street for the evening.
- The inner north (Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Carlton) is where the small bars, the music rooms and the comedy are, and a growing number of independents who prefer it to the south side.
- The east and the bayside suburbs are mostly outcall territory, with a travel fee from the inner city.
On LuXeel, the Melbourne directory page lists published independents with rates and availability, and the map shows incalls and venues at suburb level.
Venues and clubs
Melbourne's licensed venues now operate under ordinary planning law, the same as a shop, which is why the city's brothels and clubs have become more visible and more varied since 2023. LuXeel lists the ones that have been reviewed and published on the Melbourne brothels and Melbourne clubs pages, with hours, areas and what each place is like. A venue visit is a different experience from an independent booking (you choose on arrival and the house handles the admin), and some clients prefer it for a first night out. The Tonight page lists what is on, including events.
Planning a Melbourne dinner date
This is the booking Melbourne is known for, and the city's restaurants are built for it: rooms where you can talk, counters where arriving as a pair is unremarkable, and wine lists that reward the time. A plan that works:
- Book her first. Three to five hours, starting at seven or eight, and ask where she likes to start; most Melbourne companions have a laneway or a Chapel Street room they prefer.
- Book the restaurant in your name. Flinders Lane and the laneways for the CBD; Chapel Street or Toorak Road for the south side; Gertrude Street or Smith Street for the inner north. Ask her for a suggestion.
- Book the room. A CBD or Southbank hotel, checked into before dinner.
- Meet where she suggests, often the hotel bar or a small bar near the restaurant.
- Dinner, then one more bar on the walk back if the evening is going well; Melbourne's laneways reward a detour.
- Keep the arrangement private until you are in the room. To the restaurant you are two people at dinner.
Our dinner date guide covers the conventions, and the etiquette guide the rest.
Practical Melbourne
- Getting around. Trams run until after midnight on weekends and later on the main routes; rideshares are plentiful in the CBD and inner suburbs. Companions arrange their own transport to and from a booking; do not offer to drive them.
- Hotels. Collins Street and Southbank have the depth, from business hotels to the big names on the river. Book in your own name; give the room number only when she asks, on the night.
- Cash. Deposits by transfer, the balance usually in cash on the day. Have the full amount before you meet.
- Timing. Weekday evenings are easier to book here than in Sydney, because Melbourne goes out on weeknights. "Available now" on a profile means the companion updated her status today.
- Weather. Melbourne will give you four seasons in an evening. A jacket, and a plan that does not depend on a walk.
- Touring. Melbourne is the second stop on most tours after Sydney; touring dates appear on profiles a week or two ahead.
A Melbourne evening, hour by hour
- Six. Check into the hotel. One line to your companion confirming the time and meeting place.
- Seven. A small bar near the restaurant: a glass of something, the conversation starts.
- Eight. Dinner. Unhurried.
- Ten thirty. The laneway walk back, one more drink somewhere with a counter.
- Eleven. The hotel. The balance handed over in the first minute, without being asked.
- Late. The booking ends when the time ends. A thank you, and she arranges her own way home.
Safety and good practice
Melbourne is a safe city for this, and the law is settled. What keeps it that way: book reviewed profiles (every LuXeel profile is checked by a person; verification badges and verified reviews tell you more), pay the deposit and provide screening, keep your phone in your pocket, respect boundaries, pay in full, leave on time.
